What’s the first impression people have when they walk through the door of your coworking space? Not after the tour, not after they’ve talked with you and your team, but that very first impression.
In a recent Coworking Creators Lab workshop, Maggie Terhune shared that within seven seconds, someone has already made an impression of your space, community, and you.
So what does that first step through the door look like in your space?
Years ago, I was dragging my dad around Salt Lake City looking at different shared workspaces. The first few were void of life. They were fluorescent-lit boxes with a vibe just a step or two above cubicles.
I could feel my dad’s confusion growing by the minute, wondering what it was that I loved so much about this thing called coworking.
Then we walked into a space that was vibing with life and energy. There was cool art on the walls, music playing, people chatting, meeting, working, walking around. There were areas that were clearly designed for connection. It was full of life.
I turned to my dad and said, “This is what I’m talking about.”
That’s the best example I personally have of the importance of those first seven seconds. And depending on what someone is looking for, you’re either going to be for them … or not for them. But it’s essential that you clearly be for someone, and that you’re clear about that from the very first impression.
No one wants to work in a bland, fluorescent space that slowly sucks the soul out of you. And if someone thinks they do, it’s because they don’t know there are alternatives.
So look at that first impression people have of your space with fresh eyes. What do they experience in those first seven seconds? What do they see and hear? Who do they encounter? What do they feel as soon as they step into your space?
Spend time exploring this because it matters as much as all the razzle dazzle and charm of your tour. And if you lose someone on that first impression, they may never come back to experience the deeper levels of connection you and your community offer.
I’m not saying it’s right, I’m just saying it’s true.
