Debunking 10 coworking myths

debunking coworking myths

Despite (or maybe because of) the massive growth of the flexible workspace industry, a bunch of myths about coworking still persist. Some were never true and others may have been true a decade ago but they no longer reflect how coworking has evolved.

So let’s set the record straight. Here are 10 coworking myths to debunk:

Myth #1: Coworking is only for freelancers and startups.

Reality: Coworking spaces now serve everyone from solopreneurs to Fortune 500 companies. Remote employees, hybrid teams, consultants, nonprofits, and enterprise organizations increasingly use coworking as an alternative to traditional office leases or working from home.

Myth #2: Coworking spaces are noisy and distracting.

Reality: Most modern coworking spaces are intentionally designed for different work styles. Open collaboration areas are balanced with quiet zones, phone booths, meeting rooms, and private offices. Coworking frequently offers fewer distractions than working from home.

Myth #3: Coworking is more expensive than a traditional office.

Reality: When you factor in internet, utilities, furniture, cleaning, coffee, meeting rooms, and space management, coworking is surprisingly cost-effective. Many businesses discover they can reduce overhead while gaining access to amenities (and community) they couldn’t easily provide on their own.

Myth #4: There is no privacy.

Reality: Today’s coworking spaces offer a range of workspace options. Private offices, conference rooms, secure access areas, day offices, and soundproof phone booths allow members to handle private conversations and focused work without sacrificing flexibility.

Myth #5: Community means everyone has to be friends.

Reality: A coworking community isn’t one giant friend group. Some members want deep relationships, others want casual familiarity. Some want collaboration, others simply want to work around other humans. The goal isn’t to create one experience of belonging, it’s to create many pathways to belonging.

Myth #6: If people are in the same room, community will happen.

Reality: Proximity creates possibility, not connection. I’ve visited coworking spaces packed with people who barely knew each other and spaces with fewer members that felt deeply connected. Community doesn’t grow with square footage and the number of members, it grows with intentionality.

Myth #7: Events create community.

Reality: Events can help, but community happens between events. It happens in kitchen conversations, shared routines, introductions, celebrations, inside jokes, and the small moments that happen when people see each other regularly. The strongest communities are built on relationships.

Myth #8: Everyone in coworking is an extrovert.

Reality: Many coworking members are introverts. Great spaces create multiple pathways to connection. Some people thrive at happy hours and networking events while others build relationships slowly through familiar faces, one-on-one conversations, and everyday interactions. There is no single way to belong in a great coworking community.

Myth #9: Occupancy equals success.

Reality: Full doesn’t mean activated. I’ve visited busy spaces that felt surprisingly lonely and quiet spaces that felt alive with energy and relationships. The metric that matters most isn’t occupancy, it’s how many meaningful connections are being created in the space.

Myth #10: People join coworking for community.

Reality: Many people join for a practical reason. They need a desk, an office, better wi-fi, a shorter commute, or a break from working at home. But they stay because they make friends, they find collaborators, they become regulars, they start feeling like they belong. That’s where the coworking magic begins.

The Biggest Myth of All

The biggest myth about coworking is that it’s about work. It is … but work is simply the reason people walk through the door. And it’s what every space in the world offers.

The deeper opportunity that the best coworking spaces create is helping people find connection, community, and belonging. In a world where loneliness is rising and traditional gathering places are disappearing, coworking spaces can be much more than places to work, they can be pathways to belonging.
